Under California law, there are a number of paths to becoming a Dental Assistant. Some students choose to take a Dental Assisting Program, which typically takes about a year of full time study, and can be expensive. Another option is to earn required certifications on the job. Indigo Institute is designed to provide the required certifications to both maintain employment and prepare for licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant.
To become an unlicensed dental assistant or DA in California, you can start working in a dental office under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Either before or within 120 days of employment, you must complete the following mandatory certification courses:
California also allows unlicensed DAs to help patients with x-rays and coronal polishing under the supervision of a licensed dentist by taking the following mandatory certification courses:
After you have worked on the job as an unlicensed DA and wish to become a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), here’s what you need to do:
1 . Work Experience: Accumulate at least 15 months (equivalent to 1,280 hours) of work experience under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
2. Complete These Required Courses (in addition to the DA courses listed above):
3. Apply for and Pass the RDA Exam: Submit your application for the RDA Combined Written and Law and Ethics Exam to the California Dental Board. Once approved, you’ll be notified to take the exam. Upon passing, you will receive your RDA license, allowing you to perform expanded duties. And to help you do your best, Indigo offers an amazing online RDA exam test prep course.
