Dental Practice Act & Basic Life Support

Coronal Polishing

Becoming a California Dental Assistant

To become a dental assistant in California, you have several options: complete a year-long dental assisting program, gain experience on the job, or combine coursework with practical hours. At Indigo, we offer an accelerated, hybrid training model that blends the flexibility of online learning with hands-on clinical experience in state-of-the-art dental offices. Our programs are created and taught by industry experts, not only preparing you for a successful dental assisting career but also providing individual certification courses to help you maintain employment or qualify for licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant.

How to Become a Dental Assistant (DA)

To become an unlicensed dental assistant or DA in California, you can start working in a dental office under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Either before or within 120 days of employment, you must complete the following mandatory certification courses:

Dental Practice Act
Infection Control
Basic Life Support (BLS)

California also allows unlicensed DAs to help patients with x-rays and coronal polishing under the supervision of a licensed dentist by taking the following mandatory certification courses:

Radiation Safety
Coronal Polishing
How to Become a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

After you have worked on the job as an unlicensed DA and wish to become a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), here’s what you need to do:

1 . Work Experience: Accumulate at least 15 months (equivalent to 1,280 hours) of work experience under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

2. Complete These Required Courses (in addition to the DA courses listed above):

Coronal Polishing
Pit and Fissure Sealants

3. Apply for and Pass the RDA Exam: Submit your application for the RDA Combined Written and Law and Ethics Exam to the California Dental Board. Once approved, you’ll be notified to take the exam.  Upon passing, you will receive your RDA license, allowing you to perform expanded duties.
